The Maumee River – One of North America’s Most Famous Walleye Rivers

The Maumee River in northwest Ohio is widely known as one of the most famous spring walleye fisheries in North America. Flowing nearly 140 miles through Ohio before emptying into the western basin of Lake Erie at Toledo, the Maumee becomes the focal point of one of the largest annual walleye spawning runs in the Great Lakes.

Every spring, hundreds of thousands of Lake Erie walleye migrate upstream into the Maumee River to spawn on its gravel and rocky river bottoms. This migration creates an incredible fishing opportunity that attracts anglers from across the United States and Canada. During the peak of the run, anglers line the riverbanks and wade into the current casting jigs in pursuit of these powerful spawning fish.

Unlike many other Great Lakes rivers that are primarily fished by boat, the Maumee River is famous for its shoreline and wade fishing. Anglers wearing chest waders cast upstream and allow their jigs to drift naturally along the river bottom, a technique that has become synonymous with the Maumee River walleye run.

The river’s moderate current, stained spring water, and rocky structure create ideal conditions for walleye fishing. Productive stretches of the river include popular access areas such as Side Cut Metropark, Farnsworth Metropark, Jerome Road, and the Waterville area, where anglers target migrating fish moving upstream from Lake Erie.

Because of the river’s typical spring water color and current conditions, anglers rely heavily on jigs paired with soft plastic baits that can maintain bottom contact while creating enough visibility and vibration for fish to locate them. Bright and contrasting colors are often effective in stained water, while natural baitfish tones can excel when the river clears later in the season.

For many anglers, the Maumee River walleye run marks the official start of spring fishing in the Great Lakes region, making it one of the most anticipated seasonal fisheries each year.
